John Wetton was an English bassist and singer who is best remembered for his time with King Crimson and for fronting his own popular prog-rock band, Asia.  After several years of playing and singing in local bands, Wetton was invited by Robert Fripp to join King Crimson as bassist and lead singer.  The year was 1972, and over the next two-plus years, he performed on the band’s critically acclaimed Larks’ Tongues in AspicStarless and Bible Black, and Red.  Following the release of Red, King Crimson went on hiatus, s0 Wetton worked with several other groups, including Roxy MusicWishbone Ash, and Uriah Heap.  In 1980, he formed Asia, a super group with Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, and Carl Palmer.  The band’s self-titled debut of 1982 reached #1 on the US and UK charts and went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide.  In later years, Wetton released several solo albums while collaborating with the likes of Steve Hackett and Renaissance. In 2006, he reunited with the original members of Asia to release Phoenix, their first since 1983.  They went on to release a handful of new studio albums over the next several years.   John Wetton died of colon cancer on January 31, 2017.  He was 67.

Died On This Date (January 28, 2017) Geoff Nichols / Black Sabbath

Geoff Nicholls was the longtime keyboardist for Black Sabbath.  Although not nearly as recognized as core group since he primarily played off stage for some 25 years.  Born in Birmingham, England, Nicholls helped form his first band of note, Quartz (initially called Bandy Legs) during the mid-’70s.  Quartz, an influential band that helped usher in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, built a sizable enough following to sign with Jet Records in 1976.  They released their debut album, the Tony Iommi-produced Quartz in 1977 and went on to tour with Black Sabbath after its release. In 1979, Nicholls left Quartz to play with Black Sabbath. Although unaccredited, his debut was on their Heaven and Hell album of 1980. He went on to play on every subsequent Sabbath album through 1995’s Forbidden.  In later years Nicholls played with former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin.  Geoff Nicholls died of lung cancer on January 28, 2017.  He was 68.

Died On This Date (January 24, 2017) Butch Trucks / The Allman Brothers

Butch Trucks was a founding drummer for legendary Southern rock band, the Allman Brothers Band.  Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks first played in several local bands including the 31st of February before settling in with  Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Berry OakleyDickey Betts, and Jamoie Johanson as the Allman Brothers Band in 1969.  They went on to become one of the most influential rock bands America has ever produced.  Albums like The Allman Brothers Band, At Fillmore East, and Eat A Peach are considered landmark recordings of the rock era.  Butch Trucks reportedly died from a gunshot to the head on January 24, 2017.  He was 69.

Died On This Date (January 23, 2017) Bimba Bosé / Popular Spanish Singer, Model & Actress

Bimba Bosé was a Spanish model, actress and singers who graced some of the most respected fashion magazines and runways in the world.  Her contributions to popular music weren’t nearly as well-known, but included performances with her uncle, Miguel Bosé, the revered Spanish singer. In 2007, Bosé sang with her uncle on his hit single and video, “Como un Lobo,” which they performed on that year’s Latin Grammy Award show.  The following year Bosè formed the Cabriolets with whom she recorded three albums. Her first album, Demo, included guests, Marc Ribot and John Medeski. Bimba Bosé was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. She was 41 when she died from the disease on January 23, 2017.

 

 

Died On This Date (January 22, 2017) Jaki Liebezeit / Drummer For Can

Jaki Leibezeit was the founding drummer for the influential German avant-garde rock band, Can.  Initially performing free jazz during the early- to mid-’60s, Leibezeit moved more toward experimental rock when he co-founded Can in 1968.  Can incorporated elements of world music, psychedelic rock, jazz, and electronic, with Leibezeit providing the prominent drum beat along the way.  By doing so, Can helped build the foundation of Germany’s krautrock movement.  Over the years, they released several albums including two of their most popular, Tago Mago and Ege Bamyası. Outside of Can, Leibzeit collaborated with Jah Wobble, Depeche Mode and Brian Eno, to name a few.  Jaki Leibezeit was 78 when he died of pneumonia on January 22, 2017.
