Paul Bryant
September 22, 1933 – December 4, 2009

Paul Bryant was a respected jazz keyboardist who played a key role in the development of the west coast jazz sound.  His talent earned him the nickname of  the “Central Avenue Kid.”  L.A.’s Central Avenue was the epicenter of the local jazz scene during the ’50s and ’60s.  Over the course of his career, he released eight albums on such respected labels as Pacific Jazz, and toured the world.  On December 4, 2009, Paul Bryant passed away at the age of 76.

  1. I’am a sister of Paul Bryant & I happened across this website. Thought it was interesting that this site’s entitled “the music’s over & my tribute to my brother centered on that “theme” as well. The following’s is the tribute, aread @ Paul’s memorial service on Jan 16, 2010 in Los Angeles: [ps 23 also part of service so I commented…]

FOR PAUL WHO HAS PASSED ON FROM THIS EARTH:
    Louis Armstrong once said:
“MUSICIANS DON’T RETIRE; THEY STOP WHEN THERE’S NO MORE MUSIC IN THEM.”

Who knows, maybe Paul witnessed Louis’ quote in person; Paul played, rehearsed and socialized among the music legends.

The music never left my brother, even as he lay sick in the hospital. When I visited him before he died, he talked about his gigs abroad and throughout the United States. As he reminisced, he recalled selections he performed, and with syncopated voice, expressed the beats of the music.

Paul refreshed his heart with music. We may retire him to rest now, but his music will never stop. As it out-pours from his spirit, Paul’s music will continue to refresh our hearts.

I will miss you, my big brother.

TO THE LIVING WHO STILL REMAIN ON THIS EARTH

A notation on Psalm 23 – verse 6 [New Living Translation]:

6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,

and I will live in the house of the Lord
    forever.

God is our Shepherd. Our destiny is tied to His goodness and mercy which He longs to shower upon us, until He brings each of us home to dwell with Him.

May each of us call upon the Lord & pray:

Father-God to please bathe my heart in Your goodness,

And reach through me and my influence to extend Your love to others,

Make my heart and hope find its hope in You.
In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen

    Michele Martin
