Minnie Riperton
November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979

Minnie Riperton was the five-octave voice behind one of soul music’s greatest ballads, “Loving You.”   After studying music as a child, Riperton began her career while still in high school when she joined a Chicago group, the Gems, who then signed to Chess and released a few records.  At around this time, Riperton was also singing back up on recordings by the likes of Etta James and Fontella Bass.  After graduating, Riperton got a job as a receptionist at Chess who subsequently signed her to a solo contract, but under the name, Andrea Davis.   Later fronting a soul band called the Rotary Connection, Riperton met her future husband, composer Richard Rudolph.  They would later have a daughter, Maya Rudolph, a future actress and cast member of Saturday Night Live.  After a few years fronting Rotary Connection, Riperton and Rudolph took some time off and later moved to Los Angeles where they hooked up with Stevie Wonder who co-produced Riperton’s breakthrough album, 1974’s Perfect Angel which included the world wide smash hit, “Loving You.”   But within two years, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy which couldn’t stop the spread of the disease.  Even with her health failing, Riperton continued to work up until recording what would be her final album, 1979’s Minnie.  She died of cancer later that year at the age of 31.

Died On This Date (June 24, 2008) Ira B. Tucker / Sang Lead For The Dixie Hummingbirds

Ira B. Tucker Sr. was the lead singer for the celebrated gospel vocal group, the Dixie Hummingbirds.  Joining the group at the age of 13, Tucker fronted them for the next 70 years.  They have been called a direct inspiration for the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Paul Simon, B.B. King, Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin.  Tucker died of heart failure at the age of 83.



Died On This Date (April 10, 2008) Carl Evans Jr. / Fattburger

Carl Evans Jr.
February 19, 1955 – April 10, 2008

carl-evans-jrCarl Evans Jr. was the keyboardist for San Diego contemporary jazz band, Fattburger. Evans began playing the keyboards as a child and by the time he was in high school, he was in a funk band called Power. The band was so good that Barry White hired them to go on tour with him, forcing Evans to finish high school a semester early. In later years, Evans could be heard performing with the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker. In 1984, Evans co-founded Fattburger, a jazz band that found great popularity throughout Southern California and beyond. They recorded several critically acclaimed albums and earned a Grammy nomination. Evans died at the age of 53 of complications from diabetes.

Died On This Date (March 24, 2009) Uriel Jones / Drummer in Motown’s Funk Brothers

Uriel Jones
June 13, 1934 – March 24, 2009

uriel-jonesUriel Jones was the phenomenal drummer for the Funk Brothers, Motown’s house band, throughout the ’60s and early ’70s.  There were of course, other drummers during this time period, but it was Jones’ funky beats that were heard on “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross), “I Second That Emotion” (Smokey Robinson), and “For Once In My Life” (Stevie Wonder) among others.  Uriel Jones died on March 24, 2009 of complications from an earlier heart attack.  He was 74.

Died On This Date (March 21, 2004) Johnny Bristol / Prolific Motown Songwriter

Johnny Bristol
February 3rd, 1939 – March 21, 2004

Part of the Motown hit making machine from 1961 to 1973, Johnny Bristol could take partial credit for countless massive hits as a writer and/or producer. Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Edwin Starr and Stevie Wonder are just a handful of who he has helped make superstars out of. Bristol also released a half-dozen of his own albums throughout the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. He passed away at the age of 65, reportedly from natural causes.
