Died On This Date (August 11, 2011) Jani Lane / Lead Singer Of Warrant

Jani Lane (Born John Oswald)
February 1, 1964 – August 11, 2011

Jani Lane is perhaps best remembered as the front man and main lyricist for the wildly successful late ’80s / early ’90s hair metal band, Warrant who went on to sell over four million albums.  Lane was just barely out of diapers when he first learned to play the drums in Akron, Ohio, and by the time he was 11, he was performing at local clubs.  After graduating from high school, he joined his first proper band, Cyren, and by the mid ’80s, he was in the thick of L.A.’s exploding pop-metal scene with his own band, Plain Jane.  In 1986, Lane and band mate Steven Sweet joined forces with guitarist, Erik Turner in the latter’s up-and-coming glam metal band, Warrant.  The group quickly built a following throughout West Hollywood’s storied Sunset Strip clubs thanks in part to Lane’s commanding stage presence and talent as a songwriter.  It wasn’t long before they were signed to Columbia Records, who went on to release a string of hit albums that included the double-platinum sellers, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and Cherry Pie.  The colorful band fast became darlings of MTV with such videos “Down Boys” and “Cherry Pie,” and found themselves playing in front of countless screaming fans around the world.  Following the release of Warrant’s third album, Dog Eat Dog, Lane decided to leave the group, but returned the following year and continued on until 2004, only to leave again and return for one last time in 2008.  By the end of that year however, he was gone for good due to conflicts within the band.  Throughout the 2000s, Lane lent his vocal talents to several other projects, released a solo album, and was part of the hard rock supergroup of sorts, Saints of the Underground, which included members of Ratt and Alice Cooper’s band.  Lane also dabbled in acting, appearing such early ’90s films as Caged Fear and High Strung.  In 2005, he competed in VH1’s reality fitness program, Celebrity Fit Club where he lost 23 pounds.  On August 11, 2011, Jani Lane, age 47, was found dead in a Woodland Hills, California hotel room.  The Los Angeles Coroner’s office ultimately ruled that he died of acute ethanol poisoning.

Died On This Date (June 18, 1999) Frank C. Starr / The Four Horsemen & SIN Lead Singer

Frank C. Starr
1958 – June 18, 1999

Frank C. Starr was a charismatic lead vocalist for hard rock bands, Alien, SIN, and most famously, the Four Horsemen. Raised on Long Island, NY, Starr eventually landed in Los Angeles to take his shot at the big time. After a short run in a band called Alien, Starr began to make a name for himself fronting a band called SIN through the mid ’80s, but struggled to get noticed in the same Sunset Strip scene that gave us Guns ‘n Roses, Ratt, and Great White. After the band called it quits in 1984, Starr landed in the Four Horsemen, a rock band that took its cue more from ’70s rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd or AC/DC than such contemporaries as Poison or Faster Pussycat. After self-releasing a four-song EP in 1989, the band were snatched up by Rick Rubin’s Def American label and went into the studio with Rubin producing. The resulting album Nobody Said It Was Easy, garnered enough critical praise and fan support to land them on the road touring with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Black Crowes as well as regular video rotation on MTV. But all this wasn’t enough to translate into significant album sales. At the same time, word was getting around that Starr was developing a reputation for his drug use and subsequent run-ins with the law, reportedly leading to a stint in jail on drug charges forcing the label to drop the band. But all were false claims according to the band, the only reason they were dropped was because of poor record sales. The sudden rise of grunge as well as some internal fighting seemed to be the end of the Four Horsemen, but after some personnel changes, they regrouped and began working on a new album in 1994. But after losing original drummer, Ken “Dimwit” Montgomery, to a drug overdose in September of 1994, the band suffered another serious blow on November of 1995 when Starr was struck by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle along Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles. He went into a coma and never recovered and eventually died from those injuries on June 18, 1999.

Died On This Date (June 9, 2008) Ragamuffin / Our Rasta Kitty

Ragamuffin
March 1989 – June 9, 2008

Ragamuffin was a really cool cat whose connection to popular music goes back to the Spring of 1989 when bands like Guns ‘n’ Roses, Poison and his favorite treat, Ratt ruled the boulevards near his first home in Glendale, California. Even within those first few weeks of his life, it was quite apparent that Ragamuffin was taken with the music that constantly played throughout his apartment, and in particular, the dancehall reggae of such artists as Yellowman, Buju Banton, and Luciano. He therefore became known as Ragamuffin, a form of dancehall whose sound is primarily made up of electronic music. in 1995, Ragamuffin moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, the so-called birthplace of Rock & Roll and home to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. While in Cleveland, Ragamuffin lived through the most snowfall in Cleveland history. Back in Southern California in 1999, Ragamuffin reached an international audience when he was featured in a short essay called “The Cat Doctor,” in the best selling book, Chicken Soup For The Cat & Dog Lover’s Soul. Throughout his long and healthy life, Ragamuffin survived the torment of three dogs, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a hot drive across the country, and countless hairballs. Sadly, Raggamuffin’s health began to deteriorate as he neared 20 years old. He was laid to rest on June 9, 2008, leaving behind canine brother and sister, Marley and Nicki.

Robbin Crosby is best known as the co-lead guitarist for Ratt, one of the biggest acts to come out of the ’80s hair metal scene. Joining the band in 1982, he helped them achieve worldwide fame by authoring some of their biggest hits, including “Round And Round” and “Lay It Down.” By all accounts, Crosby was the best-liked member of the group, perhaps because he always made time for his fans and was professional and courteous when it came to the business side of things. Living the so-called rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle only added to the fun-loving guy everyone enjoyed being around. But apparently things were much different on the inside, as Crosby reportedly suffered from insecurities and depression. He sought the comfort of heroin which would eventually lead to his premature death. His drug use contributed to his parting ways with Ratt in 1990 and sent him further and further down the road of destruction. He eventually found himself divorced and losing most of the millions he had earned with Ratt. In 2001, he announced that he had full blown AIDS and had spent much of the previous eight years in and out of the hospital. He also suffered from a pancreatic condition that caused his weight to balloon to over 400 pounds at his death. Crosby died of a heroin overdose at the age of 42, not of complications from AIDS as had been reported.
