Died On This Date (August 22, 2011) Frank DiLeo / Label Veteran; Managed Michael Jackson

Frank DiLeo
October 23, 1947 – August 22, 2011

With Michael Jackson

Frank DiLeo was a longtime and sometimes controversial music industry executive as well as a part-time actor.  Launching his music career just after high school, DiLeo first worked as a rack jobber in Pittsburgh. He went on to work for several labels in radio promotion, while along the way, building a reputation for getting records played.  He held high-ranking positions at CBS Records, Bell, RCA and ultimately, for Walter Yetnikoff at Epic, where during the ’80s, he was credited for taking the label from #14 in the U.S. to #2.  He was largely responsible for the success of such acts as Michael Jackson, Quiet Riot, REO Speedwagon, Ozzy Osbourne and Cyndi Lauper, to name a few.  His methods may have been considered less than above-board by some, but he clearly got results.  After the success of Jackson’s Thriller, the singer asked DiLeo to be his manager in a partnership that lasted until 1989.  Over the years, DiLeo also managed Richie Sambora, Taylor Dane and Laura Branigan.  He also formed a business relationship with Prince.  As an actor, DiLeo appeared in Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World 2, and Goodfellas in which he played Tuddy Cicero, based on real life organized crime figure, Vito “Tuddy” Vario.  In March of 2011, Frank DiLeo had heart surgery.  He died from complications on August 22, 2011.

Perhaps not the most influential rock guitarist of the ’80s, Randy Rhoads was no doubt one of the most original. Instead of trying to be the “next Eddie Van Halen,” Rhoads was the first metal guitarist to incorporate classical styles into his playing. Learning to play as a young child, Rhoads kicked around in a few high-school bands before helping to form Quiet Riot with Kevin Dubrow. That led to an audition to play in Ozzy Osbourne‘s post-Black Sabbath solo band. Rhoads easily landed the gig and with his incendiary shredding, Ozzy’s first solo album Blizzard of Oz, became one of the greatest rock albums of the era. Within just a couple of years, Rhoads’ career was kicking into high gear. But then on March 19, 1982 while the band was en route to a festival in Orlando, they decided to stop and visit Jerry Calhoun, the owner of their bus company. It was while at the house, the band’s driver, Andrew Aycock persuaded Rhoads and a hairdresser to take a spin in Calhoun’s small plane. While in the air, it was reported that Aycock tried to “buzz” the band’s tour bus in order to startle them awake. On the third attempt, they clipped the side of plane which caused it to crash into Calhoun’s mansion, killing all three, including Rhoads at just 25 years of age.

Kevin Dubrow is best remembered as the lead singer of the world famous ’80s metal band, Quiet Riot.  The band was formed by guitar great, Randy Rhoads and Kelly Garni in 1973 with Dubrow coming on board shortly thereafter.  After Rhoads left to join Ozzy Osbourne in 1980, the band was relaunched as Dubrow and eventually changed back to the name, Quiet Riot.  In 1983, the band released Metal Health, and quickly became one of the era’s most popular rock bands thanks to heavy video play during MTV’s explosive early years.   Hits like “Cum On The Noize” and “Metal Health” received heavy video and radio airplay, helping them fill arenas and stadiums across the U.S. and beyond.  But by 1987, internal fighting and other factors lead to the departure of Dubrow who formed his own band while the others continued on as Quiet Riot with a different lead singer.  Unfortunately, grunge would soon rear its ugly head and cast all such hard rock bands aside for the next several years.  Dubrow eventually reunited with yet another line up of the band who, in 2006,  released the album Rehab, and began touring again.  But on or around November 19, 2007, Kevin Dubrow, age 52, died of an accidental cocaine overdose in his Las Vegas home.  Although his body wasn’t discovered until November 25th, the coroner estimated his day of passing likely six days earlier.
