Cozy Powell was without of doubt, one of rock’s most respected and influential drummers. He mastered the drums at a young age, and by 15 he was one of the best players around. Over the years Powell has been in such bands as Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake and Powell, Black Sabbath, Michael Schenker Group, Jeff Beck Group, and when Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham died in 1980, Powell was considered to take his place until the band decided to call it quits. He drummed on over 60 albums and played on numerous other recordings as well.  Powell’s other passion was racing cars and motorcycles. He even drove for Hitachi on the UK race circuit for a bit. That love for speed would eventually kill him. Cozy Powell died on April 5, 1998 from injuries he sustained after crashing his car on the M4 Motorway near Bristol, England. Other factors might have been the bad weather and the fact that he was talking to his girlfriend on a cell phone. He was 50 years old.

Died On This Date (January 19, 2006) Wilson Pickett / Soul Legend

Wilson Pickett
March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006

The great Wilson Pickett was a soul performer and songwriter who would be responsible for some of the genre’s greatest recordings.  He began his career in Gospel, but with a flair for showmanship akin to Little Richard and James Brown, it wasn’t long before he made the jump to secular R&B.  In 1965, Pickett began recording a series of hits that included, “In the Midnight Hour,” “Land of 1000 Dances,” “Ninety Nine and a Half Won’t Do,” and “Mustang Sally.”  His songs have been recorded by the greatest acts in rock music.  That list includes Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Los Lobos, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Grateful Dead, to name just a few.  Pickett continued to make records well into the ’90s, though his hit-making days ended back in the mid ’70s.  And he made concert performances up all the way up until 2004, only to step down due to health reasons.  On January 19, 2006, 64 year-old Wilson Pickett died of a heart attack.

Randy California was the original lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter for the psychedelic rock band, Spirit.  Formed in Los Angeles in 1967, the group is best remembered for their 1969 hit, “I Got A Line On You.”  California mastered the electric guitar as a child and when he was just 15, he was invited to play in Jimi Hendrix’s Jimmy James & the Blue Flames.  It was Hendrix who began calling him Randy “California” to distinguish him from the band’s Randy Palmer who then became known as Randy Texas. It is believed that California would have become a member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.  Since he was just 15 at the time, his parents would not allow him to go with the Blue Flames to Europe where Hendrix ultimately formed the Experience.  California soon helped form Spirit who released their first album, Spirit, when he was still just 17.  That album included the song, “Taurus,” a song that includes a California guitar part that many have accused Jimmy Page for lifting when he wrote Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”  By the early ’70s, California parted ways with Spirit and released his first solo album, but then reformed a new version of the group with original member, Ed Cassidy in 1974.  They continued on until California’s tragic death.  On January 2, 1997, Randy California drowned while rescuing his son from a powerful rip tide while swimming in the ocean off Hawaii.  His son survived, but California was killed at the age of 46.
