Kim Fowley was an American producer, musician, singer, songwriter, manager, disc jockey, music publisher, and film maker who is perhaps best remembered for forming and managing the Runaways.  And legend has it that he was the one who created the phenomenon of lighting one’s match/lighter at a concert.  Born in Los Angeles, Fowley got into the music business during the ’60s, initially producing and publishing novelty hits like “Alley Oop” by the Hollywood Argyles (which was basically just Fowley with mostly anonymous studio musicians) and  “Popsicles and Icicles” by the Murmaids.  The list of artists he either produce or write/co-write songs reads like a who’s who of ’70s rock and pop. That list includes Gene VincentKISS, Warren Zevon, Cat Stevens, Helen Reddy, Alice Cooper, the Byrds, and Kris Kristofferson.  In 1975, he met Joan Jett who was looking to put an all-girl band together. A couple of weeks later, he met Sandy West outside of The Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Blvd.  Fowley gave Jett’s phone number to West, and the Ruaways were born.  In 2010, Fowley was portrayed by Michael Shannon in the film, The Runaways.  During his final years, he could be heard sharing his vast knowledge of pop music and pop culture via his regular program on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM.  Kim Fowley was 75 when he died of bladder cancer on January 15, 2015.

Died On This Date (August 25, 2011) Laurie McAllister / Bassist For The Runaways & The Orchids

Laurie McAllister (Born Laurie Hoyt)
June 26, 1957 – August 25, 2011

At left with Joan Jett & Lita Ford

Laurie McAllistar was a bassist who is perhaps best remembered for being the last one to play in the influential all-girl rock band, the Runaways.  Born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, McAllister landed in Hollywood where she played in such local punk outfits as the Rave Ons and Baby Roulette.  In 1978, McAllister was asked to join the Runaways (replacing Vickie Blue), whose line-up at the time was Joan Jett, Cherie Curie, and Sandy West.  She never had the chance to record with the group, but played several gigs before quitting several months later.  The Runaways broke up shortly thereafter.  McAllister went on to play in another Kim Fowley affiliated all-girl rock band, the Orchids, who released one album on MCA Records in 1980.    After the Orchids broke up, McAllister moved to Amsterdam where she lived with Dutch musician and artist, Herman Brood.  She became a veterinary technician and eventually settled back in her hometown of Eugene, Oregon.  Laurie McAllister died from complications of asthma on August 25, 2011.  She was 57.

Died On This Date (October 21, 2006) Sandy West / The Runaways

Sandy West
July 10, 1959 – October 21, 2006

Sandy West was the founding drummer for the influential all-girl rock band, the Runaways.  Born and raised near the beaches of Southern California, West picked up the drums at the age of nine.  She met record producer, Kim Fowley in 1975 and told him of her desire to form an all-girl rock band.  He put her in contact with another like-minded teen, Joan Jett.  They soon found Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, and the Runaways were born.  Although the band stayed together for less than four years, their influence on rock ‘n roll cannot be denied.  With songs like “Cherry Bomb,” and “Rock & Roll,” the band was soon signed to Mercury Records and opening for such acts as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty, and Van Halen.  The Runaways disbanded in just four short years, so West went on to front her own band and play in other local groups, none sparking the kind of fame she experienced with the Runaways.  She also never benefited financially from the band’s popularity. On October 21, 2006,  Sandy West, 47, died of a brain tumor that was borne from lung cancer.
