John Coltrane
September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967

trane Although his professional career was cut short after just twelve years, John Coltrane’s output was legendary. Coltrane is considered one of the greatest saxophonists of all time and helped popularize the free jazz idiom. Besides recording over fifty sides, he supported countless others, including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. Most of Coltrane’s albums are must-haves for any jazz collection. That list includes Giant Steps, Blue Train, My Favorite Things, and of course, A Love Supreme. Coltrane suffered from heroin addiction but it was liver cancer that he succumbed to at the age of 40.

George Gershwin (Born Jacob Gershowitz)
September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937

Although his career spanned just around twenty years due to his untimely death, George Gerswhin, along with his brother Ira Gershwin, created some of the most popular music of all time. His compositions can, to this day, be heard on Broadway, in classical concert halls, films and television. Many of his songs have become standards and have been recorded by the biggest names in show business. That list includes Barbra Streisand, Sting, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Diana Ross, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Louis Armstrong. George Gershwin died at the age of 38 during surgery for what was a brain tumor. There have been some who disputed that a tumor caused his death.

Eric Dolphy
June 20, 1928 – June 29, 1964

Eric Dolphy was a jazz saxophonist who is considered a major influence on the world of free jazz and avant garde improvisation as well. He was also one the earliest flute and bass clarinet soloists of any importance. Over his short career, Dolphy performed or recorded with such greats as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Max Roach. When Eric Dolphy died suddenly at the age of 36, it was assumed that he followed the same fate as so many jazz artists of the day, but instead of his being a drug related death, Dolphy’s was attributed to diabetic shock.

John “Wes” Montgomery
March 6, 1925 – June 15, 1968

The brother of fellow jazz greats, Buddy Montgemery and Monk Montgomery, Wes Montgomery was an acclaimed jazz guitarist whose style of playing strongly influenced the likes of, not only jazz artists like Pat Metheny an George Benson, but also such rock greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Joe Satriani. A relative late-comer to music, Montgomery taught himself to play the guitar at the age of nineteen, and although he could not read music, he had the uncanny ability to learn by ear. Throughout his short career by jazz standards, Montgomery was known to astound the likes of John Coltrane (who asked him to join his band), and Cannonball Aderley (who helped him get his first record deal) with his supurb playing. Wes Montgomery died of a heart attack at the young age of 45.

Elvin Jones
September 9, 1927 – May 18, 2004

Elvin Jones was a jazz drummer who found his fame during the post bop era. Over the course of his illustrious career, Jones played with just jazz luminaries as Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and John Coltrane with whom he played for six years during the ’60s. He can be heard on Coltrane’s landmark album, A Love Supreme. He also played behind several of his own groups over the years. J0nes’ style was highly influential on rock drummers – Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker have cited him as a direct influence. He was also a tireless educator, often taking part in drum clinics and free performances at prisons. Elvin Jones died of heart failure on May 18, 2004.
