freddieFreddie Everett was a Houston blues guitarist/singer-songwriter known throughout those parts as “The Texas Legend.”  A guitar virtuoso, some even called him the “Texas Hendrix.”  Throughout his relatively short career, Everett has shared the stage with Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Bo Diddley and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble.   He landed a recording contract with Sony Music, but had been diagnosed with MLS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and was never well enough to make the album.  Freddie Everett died as a result of the disease on April 2, 2009.

Jim Marshall was a rock photographer who took some of popular music’s most iconic photos.  His work includes celebrated shots of Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival and Johnny Cash at San Quentin prison.  He also photographed the likes of  Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin during that period.  In 1966, Marshall was the only photographer allowed backstage at the Beatles’ final concert at in San Francisco.  He was also the head photographer of Woodstock.  On March 23, 2010, Jim Marshall passed away in his New York City hotel room prior to a speaking engagement.  He was 74.

May 13, 1912 – March 20, 1988

gil Gil Evans was a respected  jazz pianist, band leader, composer and arranger who was part of an influential group of musicians that paved the way for cool jazz and jazz fusion.  Evans’ most celebrated collaborations were with Miles Davis, for whom he arranged and composed tracks on such monumental albums as Birth of the Cool, Sketches of Spain, and Miles Ahead.   During the late ’50s, Evans began releasing a string of albums that continued up to and beyond his passing.  With a keen interest in rock as well, Evans worked with some of its biggest name during the latter part of his life. That list includes the Police, Sting, the Style Council and David Bowie.  He was reportedly to collaborate with Jimi Hendrix, but Hendrix passed away before that could take place.  Gil Evans was 75 when he passed away on March 20, 1988.

Died On This Date (March 19, 2007) Luther Ingram / R&B Singer

Luther Ingram
November 30, 1937 – March 19, 2007

Perhaps best known for his hit performance of “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right,” Luther Ingram was also an accomplished songwriter. He co-wrote the Staple Singers’ hit “Respect Yourself.” Ingram spent most of his young life in Illinois where he began writing songs and took a stab as a performer. He later moved to New York City where he reportedly roomed for a brief time with another struggling unknown by the name of Jimi Hendrix. Luther spent the rest of is career writing numerous chart topping hits for the likes of Barbara Mandrell, Joe Cocker and yes, Bruce Willis. In his final years, Ingram suffered from kidney disease, partial blindness and diabetes, finally succumbing to heart failure on March 19, 2007 at the age of 69.

As the driving force behind the Mamas & the Papas, Papa John Phillips has been called one of the greatest pop songwriters of the last forty years. If there was one American group that could hold its on against the British Invasion, it was the Mamas & the Papas (John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Mama Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty) with their hits, “Monday Monday,” “California Dreamin’,” and “Got A Feeling.” Outside of the Mamas & the Papas, John had a huge hit with Scott McKenzie’s recording of his “San Francisco,” while helping to create the Monterey Pop Festival, a moment in musical history that introduced us to Jimi Hendrix. Three of his “greatest hits” were daughters Mackenzie Phillips, Chynna Phillips and Bijou Phillips. John battled substance abuse late into his life and passed away from heart failure on March 18, 2001.
