Died On This Date (February 3, 1967) Joe Meek / Successful Producer and Songwriter

Robert “Joe” Meek
April 5, 1929 – February 3, 1967

Joe Meek was a legendary English record producer who played a key role in the development of British rock ‘n roll during the early ’60s.  Many of his records are considered the foundation of the punk and garage movements of later years.   His earliest claim to fame was 1962’s “Telstar” by the Tornados.  It was the first record by a British group to top the U.S. singles chart.   The seemingly endless list of artists that Meek produced during those early years includes Screaming Lord Sutch, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, the Honeycombs and Shirley Bassey.  Perhaps more famous than the bands he worked with, were those on whom he passed.  That list includes the Beatles, Rod Stewart and David Bowie.  During the final years of Meek’s life, he suffered from severe depression and paranoia.  Perhaps because of that, he was not getting much work and his finances were drying up because of it.  He was also the victim of at least one blackmail plot and had been accused of plagiarism.  On February 3, 1967, Joe Meek unexplicably shot and killed his landlady and then turned the shotgun on himself.  He was dead at 37 years old.  It should be noted that he died on the eighth anniversary of  the death of Buddy Holly, Meek’s biggest hero.

Elmer Valentine played a critical role in the growth of popular music in the Los Angeles area by co-founding the legendary Sunset Strip clubs, the Whiskey a Go Go and the Roxy.  Born and raised in Chicago where he worked on the police force, Valentine transplanted to the L.A. area in 1960.  In 1964, Valentine and three partners opened the Whiskey which would help define the west coast rock scene of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.  Acts like the Doors, the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield played some of their earliest gigs there during the ’60s, while the likes of Great White, Motley Crue and Guns ‘n Roses did the same during the ’80s.  And of course, there were countless others between and since.  In 1966, he and investers that included Lou Adler, opened the Roxy (and later, the infamous Rainbow Bar & Grill next door).  Like the Whiskey, the Roxy hosted its own share of legendary early shows.  That list includes Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Warren Zevon, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Frank Zappa.  The Roxy’s small upstairs bar, On The Rox was also the site of some of rock music’s most notorious incidents.  In the mid ’70s, it played host to John Lennon’s infamous “lost weekend” gatherings with Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson, and Alice Cooper.  And in March of 1982, it was reportedly the last place John Belushi over-indulged before calling it a night and dying of an overdose in his hotel room.  Elmer Valentine sold his share of the Whiskey during the ’90s, but held on to his share of the Roxy and Rainbow until he passed away at the age of 80.

Died On This Date (October 14, 1977) Bing Crosby / Iconic Pop Singer

Harry “Bing” Crosby
May 3, 1903 – October 14, 1977

Bing Crosby was one of America’s most beloved entertainers, with a career that spanned over fifty years.  As a pop singer, Crosby was a direct influence on the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Dean Martin.  He was so beloved, that in 1948 it was estimated that his songs made up more than half of the 80,000 weekly hours devoted to music on radio.  He was also instrumental in the growth of the music industry itself.  In the late ’40s, he heavily invested in Ampex, helping it develop the first commercial reel-to-reel recorder in North America.   As for his music, he is credited with over 1700 recordings, almost 400 of which being top 30 hits, with over 40 making it to #1.   It is rightfully assumed that if sales data was collected more accurately during the early part of his career, those numbers would be much higher.  While vacatoining in Spain, Bing Crosby died of a massive heart attack while playing golf.  He was 74 years old.
