Tommy JohnsonTommy Johnson was a Mississippi-born blues musician whose career began around 1915, with his first recordings coming in the late ’20s.  He is considered one of the foundations of Delta blues due to his solid songwriting and his strong falsetto voice.  The band Canned Heat took their name from his “Canned Heat Blues.”  Johnson was the first known blues musician’s to claim that he sold his soul to the devil.  A primary character in the 2000 film O’ Brother Where Art Thou, also named Tommy Johnson, is said to be based upon him and not Robert Johnson as has been assumed.  Tommy Johnson, age 60, suffered a fatal heart attack after playing a party on November 1, 1956.



Died On This Date (October 20, 1997) Henry Vestine / Canned Heat

Henry Vestine is best remembered as a guitarist for boogie blues rock band, Canned Heat.  His original tenure with the band ran from 1966 to 1969.  Prior to that, he played in Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention.  He was one of rock music’s unsung guitar heroes, ranking in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list.  Vestine, along with childhood friend and fellow music junkie, John Fahey, was responsible for finding a hospital-ridden Skip James in 1964 and helping him re-launch his career during the folk revival.   In later years, Vestine did session work and toured with a reformed Canned Heat.  While in Europe at the end of such a tour in 1997. Henry Vestine died of a heart failure at the age of 52.

smileySmiley Lewis was a New Orleans R&B artist who got his start in the clubs throughout the French Quarter during the late ’30s.  He released his first album, Here Comes Smiley Lewis on DeLuxe Records in 1947.   In 1950, producer Dave Bartholomew recorded Lewis for Imperial Records.  The sessions resulted in his biggest hits, “Tee Nah Nah,” “The Bells Are Ringing,” and the first recorded version of the R&B standard, “I Hear You Knocking” which would later be recorded by the likes of Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dave Edmunds, and Canned Heat. His “Blue Monday” became a hit for Domino while his “One Nigh,t” as covered by Elvis Presley, reached #4 on the Billboard singles chart in 1958.  Smiley Lewis was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1965 and died from it on October 7, 1966.  He was 53 years old.

Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson

Member of the 27 Club

Alan Wilson was the co-founder, lead singer and guitarist for blues rock band, Canned Heat. Formed in 1965 by Wilson and and fellow record junkie,  Bob Hite, Canned Heat played an electrified boogie version of the great blues recordings they had collected. Canned Heat endeared themselves to both psychedelic rock fans and the blues crowd by not only kicking ass at the Woodstock AND Monterey festivals, but by producing and recording with John Lee Hooker on the outstanding, Hooker ‘n’ Heat. Alan Wilson died of a drug overdose on September 3, 1970.  He was 27 years old.
