Known as “The Originator,” Bo Diddley was arguably THE flash point of rock ‘n roll. He took the blues and injected a shot of the devil into it, forever bridging the gap between the two art forms. As a singer, guitarist and songwriter, Diddley was a direct influence on many of the greatest artists in rock history. The “Bo Diddley Beat” directly inspired the likes of Buddy Holly, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, the Grateful Dead, U2, George Thorogood, Elton John and countless others. Bo Diddley died of heart failure on June 2, 2008. He was 79.

Born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, Tito Puente became one of the most influential Latin Jazz and mambo musicians. His energetic albums and performances were revered the world over. After serving in the Navy during WWII, Puente returned to New York and used his GI Bill to study music at the Juilliard School Of Music, thus launching a career that would span 50 years. Over his career, he received five Grammys, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Key to New York City, an induction into the National Congressional Record, a Smithsonian Medal, but perhaps most important, he was immortalized appearing as “himself” in The Simpsons’ famous “Who Shot Mr. Burns” episode. Puente suffered a heart attack following a show in Puerto Rico and died during heart surgery back in New York City on May 31, 2000.
Born in South Africa, Jackson Kaujeua grew up to become a much respected politically active singer, composer and musician. He is perhaps best remembered for his gospel songs. During the mid ’70s, Kaujeua was expelled from his country for his anti-apartheid activities and later moved to the UK where he performed with the popular Black Diamond. He returned home to Namibia after its independence in 1990 and became one of its most popular musicians. Jackson Kaujeua was 56 when he died of a kidney disorder on May 27, 2010.
