Danny DeGennaro, who also performed as Dan Rio, was Philadelphia-area singer, songwriter, and guitarist who is perhaps best remembered as a former member of Kingfish, a band which also counted Bob Weir and New Riders of the Purple Sage bassist, Dave Torbert, as members.  Joining the outfit post-Weir in 1979, Rio played guitar and shared vocals until they disbanded following the death of Torbert in 1982.  Rio also performed or recorded with Billy Squier, Bo Diddley and Jorma Kaukonen, Clarence Clemons throughout his career.   In recent years, DeGennaro fronted his own 5-piece blues band, the Danny DeGennaro Band.  On December 28, 2011, Danny DeGennaro, age 56, was shot and killed in his yard in what appeared to have been a robbery.  Police had no suspects in the early weeks following the murder but indicated it likely was not a random attack.

Died On This Date (December 21, 2011) Barry Clayton / The Voice Of Iron Maiden’s “Number Of The Beast”

Barry Clayton
1931 – December 21, 2011

Barry Clayton was known to many a-headbanger as the sinister voice that opens Iron Maiden’s epic song, “The Number Of The Beast.”  Released in 1982 and from the album of the same name, the song begins with Clayton hauntingly reciting an excerpt from the Book Of Revelations

“Woe to You Oh Earth and Sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short
Let him who have understanding
Reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number
Its number is six hundred and sixty six.”

The passage is quite possibly the most Bible a legion of metalers has ever read, and helped Iron Maiden break through to a massive worldwide audience that year.  Vincent Price was originally offered the gig, but reportedly turned it down due to the amount of money offered.  Clayton came on board and gave the song a less campy and more frightful reading than Price likely would have.   A television and radio pioneer, Clayton’s voice could be heard on countless English movie trailers and narrations.  He also produced England’s first black radio program, Black Londoners, which ran from 1974 to 1988.  Barry Clayton was 80 when he passed away on December 21, 2011.

Vinny Manniello was rock drummer who, as a teenager, played in Bruce Springsteen’s first band of significance, the Castiles.  Formed in the mid ’60s, the band, with Manniello on drums, was responsible for Springsteen’s first recording sessions on May 18, 1966.  The resulting single was “Baby I,” backed with “That’s What You Got.” There are believed to be only four legitimate copies of that record in existence today.  The band built a local following by playing charity events and high school graduation dances including Springsteen’s own in 1967.  They also got booked for series of shows at New York City’s legendary Cafe Wha? before the band broke up in August of 1968.  Vinny Manniello was 64 when he passed away peacefully at a local New Jersey hospital.  Cause of death was not immediately released.
