Died On This Date (February 4, 2009) Lux Interior / The Cramps
Lux Interior (Born Erick Purkhiser)
October 21, 1946 – February 4, 2009
Lux Interior, lead singer of psychobilly stalwarts The Cramps died Wednesday, February 9, 2009. According to the band’s official press release, Interior passed away due to an existing heart condition in the early morning hours at Glendale (California) Memorial Hospital. Born Erick Purkhiser in Ohio, Interior eventually landed in Sacramento, California where he reportedly picked up hitch-hiking college student, Kristy Wallace. The two soon became soul mates over shared interests in obscure music and wild fashion and formed the nucleus of the Cramps. By 1975, the couple were in New York City helping define the original punk scene that also gave us the Ramones, Talking Heads and Patti Smith. But the Cramps sound was very different from the others. By combining equal elements of surf, rockabilly, camp, horror and fetish, along with Lex’s passionately reckless vocals and stage theatrics, the Cramps quickly built a legion of loyalists that would stay true to the band for decades to come. It should be noted that the Cramps are likely the only band in history who have performed at both the Napa State Mental Hospital AND on Beverly Hills, 90210.

What You Should Own

Sid Vicious is best remembered as the bassist for the enormously influential and equally notorious punk rock band, the Sex Pistols. Vicious’ music career began in 1976 with a band called The Flowers of Romance in which he sang and played the saxophone. He also played drums for Siouxsie & the Banshees at their first ever gig, 1976’s 100 Club Punk Festival. It has alson been reported that Vicious was once considered to be the lead singer of the Damned. He was asked to join the Sex Pistols in early 1977, not necessarily because of his bass skills – he didn’t have any – but because of his punk attitude. Besides, he had been to every one of the band’s shows thus far. He played his first gig with the band on April 3, 1977, but what many don’t realize, he did not play on Never Mind the Bullocks. It was Steve Jones playing the bass parts. In November of 1977, Vicious met American music lover,
Ken Jensen was a drummer for Vancouver’s D.O.A., considered by many as one of the founders of hardcore punk. He was killed in a house fire on January 29, 1995.

Jay Reatard was an up-and-coming indie rock/garage punk singer-songwriter who had been building a solid following since he came on to the scene during the final years of the 20th century. He released his first albums on Goner Records in 1998 and continued to be prolific through his final releases on indie stalwart, Matador Records. Along the way he established himself as a critics’ darling while building his cultish following. In the early morning hours of January 13, 2010, Jay Reatard was found dead in his bed. Early reports indicated that he died in his sleep and that drugs and alcohol may have contributed, but actual cause of death was not immediately released. He was 29.
