Phil Kennemore is perhaps best remembered as the longtime and founding bassist for American heavy metal band, Y&T.  Formed in 1974 as Yesterday and Today, the band eventually shortened its name to Y&T and went on to sell millions of albums over the next two decades.  1984’s In Rock We Trust became their biggest selling album, while 1985’s “Summertime Girls,” became their signature song.  The group broke up in 1991 but then reformed briefly in 1995, and then permanently in 2001.  Kennemore has been part of every incarnation.  They are one of the few hard rock bands that survived disco, new wave, and grunge.  Phil Kennemore, age 56, died of lung cancer on January 7, 2011.

Died On This Date (December 21, 2011) Barry Clayton / The Voice Of Iron Maiden’s “Number Of The Beast”

Barry Clayton
1931 – December 21, 2011

Barry Clayton was known to many a-headbanger as the sinister voice that opens Iron Maiden’s epic song, “The Number Of The Beast.”  Released in 1982 and from the album of the same name, the song begins with Clayton hauntingly reciting an excerpt from the Book Of Revelations

“Woe to You Oh Earth and Sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short
Let him who have understanding
Reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number
Its number is six hundred and sixty six.”

The passage is quite possibly the most Bible a legion of metalers has ever read, and helped Iron Maiden break through to a massive worldwide audience that year.  Vincent Price was originally offered the gig, but reportedly turned it down due to the amount of money offered.  Clayton came on board and gave the song a less campy and more frightful reading than Price likely would have.   A television and radio pioneer, Clayton’s voice could be heard on countless English movie trailers and narrations.  He also produced England’s first black radio program, Black Londoners, which ran from 1974 to 1988.  Barry Clayton was 80 when he passed away on December 21, 2011.

Died On This Date (November 3, 2011) Cory Smoot aka Flattus Maximus of GWAR

Cory Smoot
August 25, 1977 – November 3, 2011

Cory Smoot, or as he’s better known to fans, Flattus Maximus, was the lead guitarist for notorious heavy metal band, GWAR.  Formed in 1984, GWAR built a legion of fans due in part to their over-the-top sci-fi inspired costumes and comic book violence that ran through their lyrics and live shows.  Not an original member, Smoot joined the band in 2002 and was the longest running Flattus Maximus in the band’s history.  Besides playing on every album since he joined, Smoot helped with production and mixing duties as well.  He can be heard singing lead on the band’s “Release The Flies.”  As reported by MetalSucks, during the morning hours of November 3, 2011, Cory Smoot’s GWAR band mates discovered his lifeless body as they were preparing to travel into Canada on tour.  Cause of death was attributed to a coronary artery thrombosis.
