Died On This Date (June 30, 2008) Angel Tavira / Beloved Mexican One-Handed Violinist

Angel Tavira
July 3, 1924 – June 30, 2008

Angel Tavira was a beloved Mexican violinist who lost his right hand to an exploding firecracker when he as a child.  But he had been playing the saxophone, guitar, bass and violin, learning by ear.  Even after the accident, Tavira continued on with the violin.  He was also an acclaimed composer of son calentano, a traditional form of music from the state of Guerrero.  When Tavira was 81, was cast as a farmer musician in the Felix Salgado Mendocino film, El Violin.  A year later, he won the Best Actor award at Cannes even though he had never had any formal training.  Angel Tavira died of kidney problems in 2008.

Died On This Date (June 27, 2010) Sergio Vega aka El Shaka / Popular Mexican Singer

Sergio “El Shaka” Vega
September 12, 1969 – June 27, 2010

Sergio Vega was a popular Mexican singer who, along with his brothers, gained fame as Los Hermanos Vega after moving to Phoenix, Arizona during the ’80s.  They eventually returned to Mexico and began releasing hit records under the name, Los Reyes del Norte.   By 2000, Vega retired from the music business only to make a much welcomed return as a solo artist in 2004.  He released several records that landed on the Billboard Latin Music charts over the next few years.  Reports indicate that during the early hours of June 27, 2010, Vega and his band were traveling by vehicle in or near Sinoloa, Mexico when they were involved in a violent altercation with passengers of another vehicle.   Sergio Vega, who was 40 years old, was fatally shot during the incident.

Died On This Date (May 19, 2009) Ricardo “Papin” Abreu / Respected Cuban Drummer

Ricardo Abreu
DOB Unknown – May 19, 2009

papinesAlong with his brothers, Ricardo Abreu formed Los Papines, a popular Cubun band over 45 years ago.  The band was somewhat unique in that it was just vocals and percussion.  The band has been very influential to countless Afro-Cuban musicians that have come since.  They have been named a National Cultural Heritage of Cuba.  Abreu died of a stroke at the age of 75.

Died On This Date (May 8, 2010) Francisco Aguabella / Popular Afro-Cuban Percussionist

October 10, 1925 – May 8, 2010

Francisco Aguabella was a revered Afro-Cuban, jazz and Salsa percussionist who was also a sacred drummer of the Santeria religion.  Born and raised in Cuba, Aguabella picked up his first instrument at 12, and ultimately left home in his mid-20s to pursue his music career. He performed all over the world, appeared in the Shelley Winters film, Mambo, and played at the White House.    Over the course of his career, Aguabella performed with  Frank Sinatra, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Carlos Santana, Cal Tjader, and the Doors to name a few.  In 1992, he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the Endowment for the Arts.  Francisco Aguabella was 84 when he died of cancer on May 8, 2010.

Died On This Date (April 15, 1984) Machito / Influential Latin Jazz Singer

Machito (Born Francisco Grillo)
December 3, 1909 – April 15, 1984

Machito was a Latin musician who, during the ’40s, took jazz improv and married it with Afro-Cuban rhythms to help popularize Latin jazz around the world.  As a band leader, he fronted the Afro Cubans, who also featured his sister, Graciela Perez-Grillo as lead vocalist for a time.   Machito was awarded a Latin Grammy in 1983 for his Machito & His Sals Big Band ’82, and his Kenya: Afro-Cuban Jazz of 1957 was memorialized in 2005’s 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.  Machito died of a fatal stroke he suffered while performing on April 15, 1984.  He was 74.
