Laurindo Almeida
September 2, 1917 – July 26, 1995

Laurindo Almeido was a world-class Brazilian guitarist.  Almeida was one of the most popular Spanish guitarist performing in and around Rio de Janeiro when he was invited to join Stan Kenton’s band in 1947.  After he moved to America, Almeido played with Kenton and became an in-demand session player.  Almeido’s guitar work can be heard in many classic films including The Godfather, Camelot, A Star Is Born, and The Old Man And The Sea.  He recorded many albums throughout his career, with a handful of them winning him Grammy awards.  Laurindo Almeido passed away on July 26, 1995 at the age of 77.



Died On This Date (July 25, 2008) Johnny Griffin / Tenor Sax Great

Johnny Griffin
April 24, 1928 – July 25, 2008

Known as the “Little Giant,” Johnny Griffin was a tenor saxophonist of the bop and hard bop idioms of jazz.  Griffin began playing music while in school, and was playing in a band with T-Bone Walker while still in high school.  Shortly after graduation, he joined Lionel Hampton’s band.  He was just 17.  In 1956, he began recording a series of landmark jazz albums for the storied Blue Note label.  Over the course of his career, he has played or recorded with such icons as Art Blakey, Wes Montgomery, Nat Adderley, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane.  Johnny Griffin died of a heart attack just four days after what would be his last concert.  He was 80 years old.

Died On This Date (July 25, 1992) Gary Windo / Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist

Gary Windo
November 7, 1941 – July 25, 1992

Gary Windo was an English musician best remembered for his saxophone work with the Psychedelic Furs.  After learning several instruments as a child, Windo ultimately settled on the tenor sax.  During the early ’70s, he formed his own group, the Gary Windo Quartet.  Throughout career, he worked with the likes of Todd Rundgren, Carla Bley, NRBQ, and Robert Wyatt to name a few.  He also played on much of the music heard on Saturday Night Live.  Gary Windo passed away on July 25, 1992.

Hiram Bullock
September 11, 1955 – July 25, 2008

Hiram Bullock, known to David Letterman fans as the “barefoot guitarist” in Paul Shaffer’s World’s Dangerous Band has passed away on July 25, 2008 after battling throat cancer for several months.  Besides his work on the Letterman show, Bullock lent his talents to recordings by some of music’s greatest artists.  He can be heard on Sting’s Nothing Like The Sun, Paul Simon’s One Trick Pony, and Billy Joel’s The Stranger.  Bullock also released several of his own albums throughout his career.  He was 52 when he passed away.

Willem Breuker
November 4, 1944 – July 23, 2010

Willem Breuker was a prominent Dutch jazz musician, composer and bandleader.  A saxophonist and bass clarinetist, Breuker lived outside the traditional world of jazz in that he added elements of contemporary classical and delivered often presented his music in a more theatrical manner.   Throughout his long career he either formed or played in the Instant Composers Pool, Globe Unity Orchestra, Gunter Hampel Group, and the Willem Breuker Kollektief.  He was knighted by the Order of the Neterlands Lion in 1998.  Willem Breuker was 65 when he passed away on July 23, 2010.
