Steve Gilpin
April 28, 1949 – January 6, 1992
Steve Gilpin was the lead singer for the New Zealand new wave band, Mi-Sex. Formed by Gilpin in 1978, the group scored two moderate hits with “Computer Games” and “People.” Thanks to heavy airplay, constant touring, and television exposure, Mi-Sex were one of the region’s most popular bands by 1979. After the group’s break-up in 1985, Gilpin continued on singing in various groups throughout Australia and New Zealand. In late 1991, he was involved in a car accident that left him with massive head injuries and in a coma until his death on January 6, 1992. Steve Gilpin was 42 when he passed away from his injuries.
What You Should Own
He was 42 when he died, not 46.
It’s been fixed. Thanks for your help
Tragic gone but not forgotten Steve rocked my world in the 80s I’m shattered I play mi sex everyday in my car so Steve lives on through his voice. I care and always will from a dedicated fan.
I used to drive around blasting out: Graffiti crimes. Love there music now, as then.
I had the privalige to see mi sex many times live in the eighties they were brilliant I still play all there songs all the time fond memories now there back and hopefully we will see a national tour here in adelaide it would be awesome.
I saw them in South Broken Hill in 1981 or 1982 and loved every minute. Their songs were anthems of my adolescence. I knew Steve Gilpin died a long time ago but was shocked to think its been over 21 years.
RIP… you were awesome Steve. Wikipedia under plays how big you guys were..
Steve voice was unique, saw them playing in Sydney many times. Just love there songs.
My Dad lived in the property above his in Mullum and I spent a few summer and other holidays there. Steve was a beautiful, charismatic man who would blow into a large conch shell when he wanted my Dad to pop in and say HI (usually with a large spliff!!). Dad and I went to his benefit concert at the Hordern where the Oils headlined. He is sadly missed….
what about ‘BLUE DAY’,
easily his best song ,
still one of my faves
all these years later ,,,,,
rip steve !!!!
I knew Steve in the early days. He won "New Faces" (I believe that is what it was called – a New Zealand talent show) with his song 'Spring'. I've looked for any reference to this song and cannot find it. I now llve in the US and plan on joining our local radio station to showcase New Zealand and probably some Australian music also. Any clues on if there is video of his singing "Spring" or any audio copy I might find on the internet. He had a great voice. Appreciate any help regarding this.
Hi Lady , have you checked YOUTUBE they usually have a lot of older stuff. Good luck
I know where there is the single in vinyl for sale?
Really Vic?????
I had the 'New Faces' album (as they produced one after each series,) but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the song. And I think he wore a funny top hat.
