Lew DeWitt
March 12, 1938 – August 15, 1990
Lew DeWitt is best remembered as a singer and guitarist in the Statler Brothers. He also penned a handful of their songs, including “Since Then,” and “Flowers On The Wall” which made it to #4 on the Billboard singles chart in 1965. The song found a new audience thanks to its prominent placement in Pulp Fiction in 1994. In 1982, DeWitt left the group for health reasons. In 1990, DeWitt passed away after years of struggle with Chron’s disease.
Can’t beat Lew’s music or his voice. He was such an intregal part of the Statler Brothers. His unique sound added so much to so many of their great songs.
Later when he started singing on his own, Lew wrote and sang a song that’s little known. “I Love Virginia” is a simple, yet fantastic tune & lyric. Actually I’ve always felt it would be the ideal State Song for Virginia. Maybe we could get a move on and get that accomplished. Anyway – even nearly 20 years later – Thanks Lew. God bless.
Totally agree with Pastor David R. Wilson that Lew DeWitt’s song, “I Love Virginia” would be the perfect State Song for Lew’s beloved state of Virginia! Have always said that Lew DeWitt and his music are as essential to my life as is my breathing – he’s that significant to my life! I loved him then. I love him now. When my life has ceased breathing, I’ll go to my grave loving him. What a phenomenal human being, songwriter and entertainer! Despite the enormity of his stardom, he was a “down to earth” person with his fans. June Jackson, of Lubbock, TX, and I were so lucky one afternoon to ride the carrousel with Lew. We three sang along to “I’m Lookin’ Over A Four Leaf Clover” music that played. One of many special memories I have of Lew. I treasure and often re-read the many letters, notes, etc. he sent as I play his music.
Love this man and cherish his memory ~
