Rob Collins
June 12, 1965 – July 22, 1996

Rob Collins was the original keyboardist for British alternative pop band, the Charlatans (Charlatans UK in the States).  His psychedelic organ added an edge to such Charlatans hits as “The Only One I Know” which introduced the band in 1990.  In 1992, Collins was convicted of “assisting an offender after an offense” for picking up a friend who had just performed an armed robbery.  Collins claimed to have had no knowledge of the crime.  He served four months in prison.  On July 22, 1996, while working on the Charlatans Tellin’ Stories, Collins was involved in a car accident during which he was thrown through the windshield.  Official reports indicate that he had consumed a large amount of alcohol just prior to the accident and had not been wearing a seat belt.  Collins died from head injuries at the scene.  He was just 31.  Bandmate Jon Brookes passed away on August 12, 2013.

Joe Beck
July 29, 1945 – July 22, 2008

Joe Beck was a much respected jazz guitarist who was equally at home whether performing mainstream jazz, soul jazz, post bop or fusion.  Beck released numerous albums dating back to 1970.  Over the years, he’s played wth the likes of Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Stan Getz, James Brown, Herbie Hancock and many more.  Beck died of lung cancer at the age of 62.

Died On This Date (July 22, 2010) Dick Buckley / Popular Jazz Radio Host

Dick Buckley
August 26, 1925 – July 22, 2010

Dick Buckley was a radio personality who, since 1956, hosted a popular jazz program that focused on jazz’s golden era, the ’30s and ’40s.  His program, Jazz With Dick Buckley, ran on Chicago’s WBEZ from 1977 until his retirement in 2008.  Buckley was known for having an exceptionally lush and deep radio voice and for having a vast knowledge of jazz.  Dick Buckley was 85 when he died of complications from pneumonia on July 22, 2010.

Phillip Walker
February 11, 1937 – July 22, 2010

Phillip Walker was a respected electric blues guitarist and vocalist who, over the course of some fifty years played with Little Richard, Clifton Chenier, Lonnie Brooks, Etta James and Lowell Fulson.  Walker recorded several albums throughout his career, the latest being 2007’s “Going Back Home.”  Phillip Walker was 73 when he passed away on July 22, 2010.

Harry Beckett
May 30, 1935 – July 22, 2010

Over a career that spanned over 40 years, Harry Beckett has been recognized as one of Europe’s leading jazz trumpet players.  He has also been noted as one of the leaders of the British free jazz scene.  Throughout his career, he’s played with the like of Charles Mingus, Phil Manzanera and Charlie Watts.  Beckett recorded several of his own albums as well, the latest being 2008’s The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett.  He died of a stroke on July 22, 2010.
