Billy Jones
November 20, 1949 – February 7, 1995
Billy Jones was a founding guitarist for popular Southern rock band, the Outlaws. You can hear Jones’ outstanding guitar work on such classic ’70s records as “There Goes Another Love Song” and “Green Grass & High Tides.” The Outlaws’ guitar driven country rock made them just as vital to the growth of Southern rock as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band were. Jones left the Outlaws in 1981 and reportedly kept a very low profile until word surfaced that he killed himself with a gun shot to the head on February 7, 1995. He was 45 when he died.
I knew Billy Jones and spent some precious time with The Outlaws in Studio One, Atlanta in 1978, how did he die?
Everyone´s moving on lately, people I knew like Hughie, Billy Powell and Euan from LS
There seemed to be a cloud over Hughie and Skynyrd together and he looked like an ´outsider` to me, even on stage a hired gun so to speak…LS lost something when he was no longer standing next to Ricky on stage, his guitar will be sadly missed… when will we realise that life is really too short and start to appreciate what we have Gary R??!!

Billy Jones and I were members of the Dave Graham Group along with Monte Yoho and Roy Holly(ped-dyn. Productions.) Later, Billy and I joined The Outlaws along with Dave Dix, Huey and Frank. Becky and I were notorious “friends” in High School. I was so sorry to find out that Billy and Frank had passed so tragically. I only found out out when I was moved to express consolances on huey’s death. I’d really like to talk to Monte or Dave. We’re the only ones left from Robinson night school. I think we’re all graduates, at least I am.

for sure Diane the “voice” the unreal guitar jams of his blew me away & still does….long live Billy Jones…….
When i look at the calendar it is almost 15 years since Billy passed, even though He was out of the outlaws for many years. The plain simple fact is the Outlaws were nothing without Billy and hughie together. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts. thats the Outlaws I know and Love from 75-81. What Henry is doing with the Band now is ok, i guess since there is not better option, but I saw them once and wont go back, its not the outlaws. The Outlaws died Feb 7th 1995 in my opinion. RIP Hughie and Billy
very well said Chris & the absolute truth., we all know that its plan as day., god bless Billy Jones……….bobbyh
