Mick Hodgkinson
1946 – June 18, 2007
Mick Hodgkinson was an English singer, guitarist and cult hero who, during the late ’70s, settled in Woodstock, New York, and immersed himself in the local music scene. Within no time, he formed his first band, Johnny Average and the Falcons that was made up of musicians that were in town working at the legendary Bearsville Studios. The list of artists that played with the falcons included John Sebastian and Shane Fontayne. The group would eventually become the nucleus of Mick Ronson’s The New York Yanquis after which, Hodgkinson founded the Johnny Average Band and signed with management legend, Albert Grossman. Over the years, Hodkinson/Average also collaborated with the likes of Meat Loaf and Billy J. Kramer. Mick Hodgkinson died of cancer on June 18, 2007.
Thanks to Chris Lane’ for the help
I just found out that Mick aka Johnny Average, passed away in 2007. He was the first guy to ask me to marry him back in 1969, and I laughed and said no! I kept in touch with him for many years, but lost touch about 15 years ago. I often thought of him, and today thought I’d have ‘another go’ at trying to find him. So it’s been a big shock to find out that he died. I have some of his music that he wrote and sent to me some years ago, he even wrote songs dedicated to me (the mermaid). But best of all, I have some great memories of him. RIP Mick x
Fascinating little story, Angela. Thanks for stopping by and personalizing his tribute here.

Mick was a good friend of mine and my husband Bob. He was a wonderful man and a very talented musician. We attended many legendary gatherings at he and Karen's house in West Hurley and later in Glenford. What great times – musicians getting together and jamming for the whole night while we all hung out and enjoyed. I'll also never forget how much he loved his pet rabbit "Stewart", his birds and his dog Max. Being an animal lover myself, it always gave me a particular soft spot for him. We were very sad when Mick passed away. We miss him and the fun times we shared. They are very fond memories.
I first saw Mick at our local church hall Saturday night dance way back in 1962 playing in a band called the Stormcats. They were fabulous and got me into music and the love of rock and roll . Mick became a great friend of mine and I was always amazed at his obvious talent then he could play guitar, sax, keyboard and was a great singer. He was legend in our town and his bands were always top quality. We were both friends with Ten Years After in fact Ric Lee their drummer was Micks drummer in those formative years..I could tell you many stories about Mick he was a really nice man and we still talk about him after all these years. It was great that he made a career in the USA but I know he ever forgot his roots here in Mansfield a sad loss.
Always in my heart dear Mick x you left too soon – forever friends
