Lorne Black is perhaps best remembered as the original bassist for Los Angeles metal band, Great White.  Originally formed as Highway in 1978, the band morphed through a few different names and lineups until finally settling as Great White with Black on bass during the early ’80s.  Black played on the band’s debut EP, Out Of The Night as well as their first three LPs, Great White, Shot In The Dark, and Once Bitten while helping them build a sizable following outside their hometown by nearly non-stop gigging.  Those early shows included tours supporting Whitesnake and Judas Priest.  After parting ways with the band during the late ’80s, Black went on to play in a prog rock band, LBC, do soundtrack work, and record at least one solo album, Who’s Doing Who?.  Lorne Black passed away on September 27, 2013.  Cause of death was not immediately released.

Jon Lord was an influential English keyboardist who, as co-founder of Deep Purple, has been recognized for pioneering the use of baroque and classical elements in rock music.  Lord was just 5 years old when he began studying classical piano. As he  grew older, he started gravitating toward the raw organ sounds coming from American blues artists like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. After settling in London during the late ’50s, Lord did session work (he can be heard on the Kinks‘ “You Really Got Me”) and played in various jazz and blues groups.  In 1968, he and drummer, Ian Paice formed Deep Purple.  Lord went on to play in all variations of the group through 2002.  With worldwide hits like “Hush,” “Smoke On The Water,” and “Highway Star,” – all prominently featuring Lord’s iconic organ sounds – Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, are considered the flash point of heavy metal.  They would go on to sell over 100 million albums are were even recognized as the “Globe’s Loudest Band” by Guinness Book Of World Records.  In 1978, Lord joined up with one-time Deep Purple band mate, David Coverdale in his new group, Whitesnake.  Although more a hired-gun than a full-time member, Lord’s tenure with Whitesnake lasted until 1984.   The collaborators with whom he worked throughout his career seems endless.  He also made several albums of his own.  During the early months of 2012, Lord was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which ultimately contributed to his death by pulmonary embolism on July 16, 2012.  John Lord was 71 when he passed away.

Died On This Date (October 5, 2010) Steve Lee / Lead Singer For Swiss Rock Band, Gotthard

Steve Lee
August 5, 1963 – October 5, 2010

Steve Lee was the founding lead singer of Swiss metal band, Gotthard.  Formed in 1992, the band has sold over two million albums and has seen 11 of their releases reach #1 on the Swiss charts.  By most accounts, they are one of the most successful rock bands in Switzerland’s history, the other of course, being Krokus.  Gotthard’s sound has been compared to that of Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, and Deep Purple, while Lee’s voice was as strong as any ’80s and ’90s power balladeer.   While on a holiday motorcycle tour of the United States, Lee and his group pulled off a Nevada highway to change into rain gear.  Shortly thereafter, in what was ruled an accident by local authorities, a truck driver lost control of his vehicle which then crashed into one of the parked bikes, sending it direclty into Lee.  Steve Lee died from injuries sustained in the accident.  He was 47.

Died On This Date (July 1, 2008) Mel Galley / Whitesnake Guitarist

Mel Galley
March 8, 1948 – July 1, 2008

Mel Galley is best remembered as a guitarist for David Coverdale’s  Whitesnake.  Galley joined the band in 1982, contributing to their most fruitful years.  His guitar can be heard on such hits as “Here I Go Again” and “Crying In The Rain.”  Galley later had to leave the group due to a bad arm injury made worse by a botched surgery.  For a time, he likely could never play the guitar again, but was able to come back thanks to a device he had fitted over his hand.  Prior to his stint with Whitesnake, Galley played alongside Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes in a band called Trapeze.  Galley died of esophagus cancer at the age of 60.
