Lou Martin
August 12, 1949 – August 17, 2012

Lou Martin was an Irish keyboardist who is best remembered for his years playing with Rory Gallagher.  Martin was just six years old when he began learning the piano, and when he was around 19, he formed his first band, Killing Floor. During the early ’70s, he left the group to play with Gallagher.  He played with Gallagher both live and on record through the early ’90s.  He can be heard on such albums as Blueprint, Tattoo, Defender, and Fresh Evidence.   Away from Gallagher, Martin played with the likes of Screaming Lord Sutch, Chuck Berry, and Albert Collins.  Having battled cancer and suffering a handful of strokes, Lou Martin passed away on August 17, 2012.  He was 63.

Died On This Date (June 16, 1999) Screaming Lord Sutch / Influential ’60s British Rock Singer

David “Screaming Lord” Sutch
November 10, 1940 – June 16, 1999

Screaming Lord Sutch was a vocally challenged ’60s era British rock singer who helped lay the foundation of what would be called garage rock.  His recordings are mostly associated with famed UK producer, Joe Meek.  On stage, Sutch’s performances included horror theatrics that likely influenced Alice Cooper to do the same.  His songs have been covered by such bands as the White Stripes and the Black Lips, despite the fact that his Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends album has been called the worst album of all times in at least two places.  The “heavy friends” in this case were Nicky Hopkins, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck and Noel Redding.  Reported to suffer from depression, Sutch hung himself on June 16, 1999.

Died On This Date (February 3, 1967) Joe Meek / Successful Producer and Songwriter

Robert “Joe” Meek
April 5, 1929 – February 3, 1967

Joe Meek was a legendary English record producer who played a key role in the development of British rock ‘n roll during the early ’60s.  Many of his records are considered the foundation of the punk and garage movements of later years.   His earliest claim to fame was 1962’s “Telstar” by the Tornados.  It was the first record by a British group to top the U.S. singles chart.   The seemingly endless list of artists that Meek produced during those early years includes Screaming Lord Sutch, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, the Honeycombs and Shirley Bassey.  Perhaps more famous than the bands he worked with, were those on whom he passed.  That list includes the Beatles, Rod Stewart and David Bowie.  During the final years of Meek’s life, he suffered from severe depression and paranoia.  Perhaps because of that, he was not getting much work and his finances were drying up because of it.  He was also the victim of at least one blackmail plot and had been accused of plagiarism.  On February 3, 1967, Joe Meek unexplicably shot and killed his landlady and then turned the shotgun on himself.  He was dead at 37 years old.  It should be noted that he died on the eighth anniversary of  the death of Buddy Holly, Meek’s biggest hero.

Died On This Date (September 6, 1994) Nicky Hopkins / Remarkable Session Keyboardist

Nicky Hopkins
February 24, 1944 – September 6, 1994

Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins has been called one of the greatest rock session players of all time.  Because he suffered from Chron’s disease since childhood, it was difficult for Hopkin’s to be part of a touring band, so he decided he make his mark as a studio musician instead.  After cutting his chops with Screaming Lord Sutch and Cyril Davies during the hay day of British R&B of the ’60s, went on to become one of the most favored session men in London.  Over the course of his career, he’s played on records by the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, the Kinks, and John Lennon, as well as those by such American artists as Steve Miller and Jefferson Airplane.  Nicky Hopkins died at the age of 50 due to complications from intestinal surgery.
