Vinnie Chas
DOB Unknown – April 6, 2010

Died On This Date (January 23, 1990) Peter Sweval / Looking Glass; Starz

Peter Sweval (Born Piet Sweval)
April 13, 1948 – January 23, 1990

Peter Swevel was the founding bassist for New Jersey pop band, Looking Glass.  In 1972, they released their only hit, “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” which shot to #1 on the singles chart while selling over a million copies.  No honorable ’70s pop collection is complete without it.  After Looking Glass broke up in 1974, Swevel and Jeff Grob formed Starz, a hard rock band that also had one big hit, “Cherry Baby.”  The band signed with Capitol Records and built a sizable cult following that still exists to this day.  Musically, Starz has been compared to Aerosmith, Kiss and Cheap Trick, and have been cited as a direct influence on the likes of Motley Crue and Poison.  Peter Swevel, age 42, passed away on January 23, 1990 of unknown causes.

Nicholas Dingley, better known as Razzle, was the drummer for influential ’80s glam rock band, Hanoi Rocks. Formed in 1979, the band never rose much higher than cult status, but ended up being direct influences on Motley Crue, Guns ‘N Roses, Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Poison and countless hair bands that popped up by the end of the ’80s.  During the late hours of December 8, 1984, Razzle was a passenger in a car driven by Motley Crue lead singer, Vince Neil.  While speeding and under the influence of alcohol, Neil lost control of the vehicle, crashing it into an oncoming car. The occupants of the other car were seriously injured and Razzle sustained injuries necessitating an emergency trip to the hospital.  When he arrived, he was pronounced dead on arrival at just 24 years old.  Since it was already December 9 at his home in Europe, the 9th is considered the date of his death.

Died On This Date (September 5, 2009) Mickie Jones / Bassist For Angel

Mickie Jones
December 17, 1952 – September 5, 2009

mickiejonesMickie Jones was the co-founder of and bassist for pioneering ’70s glam metal band, Angel.   Formed with guitarist, Punky Meadows in in 1975, Angel would be the link between Bowie and heavy metal.  It was Gene Simmons of Kiss who helped the band get signed to Casablanca Records, and in an ironic twist, the members of Angel chose to market themselves dressed in all white as sort of the “anti-Kiss.”  The band’s slick pop metal and androgynous image helped pave the way for such ’80s hair bands as Poison, Warrant and Motley Crue.  Even the band’s own keyboardist, Gregg Guiffria would go on to have ’80s metal hits of his own.  Even though Angel released some of the most memorable hard rock albums of the ’70s, (IE: Helluva Band and On Earth As It Is In Heaven), they never reached much beyond a cult status.  Outside of Angel, Jones played in BUX with Meadows and Joe Perry Project singer, Ralph Morman, and Empire with LA Guns drummer, Steve Riley.  It has also been reported that Jones was once asked to join the New York Dolls.  In recent years, he was working in the film industry.  Mickie Jones died of liver cancer on September 5, 2009.
