chico-hamiltonChico Hamilton was an influential American jazz drummer who helped define the West Coast cool jazz style of the 1950s.  Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Hamilton played in the same high school band as future greats, Charles Mingus and Dexter Gordon before going on to play with the likes of Lionel Hampton, T-Bone Walker, and Gerry Mulligan.  In 1948, he was hired to tour with Lena Horne with whom he performed for over six years, thus establishing himself as one of the era’s top sidemen.  In 1955, he recorded his first album under his own name and continued to do so more than 60 times throughout the rest of his career.  Hamilton also appeared as a drummer in the film Sweet Smell of Success and others.  During the ’60s, he scored numerous movies and television programs.  In 1987, he co-founded the jazz department at New School University.  Chico Hamilton was 92 when he passed away on November 25, 2013.

Died On This Date (August 8, 2010) Jack Parnell / Bandleader For The Muppets

August 6, 1923 – August 8, 2010

Jack Parnell was an English jazz drummer, pianist and bandleader who began playing is instruments at the age of five.  During WWII, he played in the RAF band.  He composed many television theme songs throughout his career, and in 1973, he became the first British musician to win an Emmy for his work on a Barbra Streisand special.   Over the course of his career, Parnell played with the likes of Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr.  From 1976 to 1981, Parnell served as the off-camera bandleader for The Muppets program.  Jack Parnell was 87 when he passed away on August 8, 2010.


Died On This Date (July 31, 1986) Teddy Wilson / Respected Jazz Pianist

Teddy Wilson
November 24, 1912 – July 31, 1986

Teddy Wilson was a much respected jazz pianist who came from the great music city of Austin, TX.  His smooth-as-silk style could be heard on recordings by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and Billie Holiday.  One of Wilson’s first professional gigs was playing alongside Bennny Goodman and Gene Krupa in the Benny Goodman Trio, later a quartet with the addition of Lionel Hampton.  When he joined the trio, Wilson became the first known African-American to perform professionally in public with a previously all-white group.  With the help of legendary producer,  John Hammond, Wilson recorded some 50 hit records throughout the late ’30s.  By the ’40s, he was leading his own sextet, and by the ’50s, he was teaching at Julliard.   Wilson spent the last couple of decades of his life quietly enjoying his life close to home until his passing of natural causes on 1986.

Gerald Wiggins
May 12, 1922 – July 13, 2008

Gerald Wiggins was a much respected classically trained jazz pianist who, over the course of his long career accompanied the likes of Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Nat King Cole, and Eartha Kitt.  Television junkies may remember him for his cameos on 227 and Moesha.  Wiggins passed away at a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 86.

Eric Gale
September 20, 1938 – May 25, 1994

galeEric Gale was a jazz guitarist whose skills made him one of the most in-demand session players, appearing on some 500 albums.  Those he recorded with include Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Nina SimoneLena Horne, Billy Joel, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, Grover Washington Jr., Jesse Belvin, and Carly Simon.  He died of cancer on May 25, 1994.
