Posted by themusicsover on June 19, 2013

Ottis “Slim” Whitman
January 20, 1923 or 1924 – June 19, 2013

slim-whitmanSlim Whitman was an American country singer, songwriter and guitarist who is perhaps best remembered for his high voice and yodeling skills.  Highly influential, even George Harrison and Michael Jackson have cited Whitman as an influence.  Born in Tampa, Florida, Whitman served in the US Navy during World War II before launching his music career.  While working in a shipyard, he was given the opportunity to sing on a local Tampa radio station only to be heard by Col. Tom Parker of Elvis Presley fame who helped secure Whitman his first recording contract with RCA Records in 1948.  A series of country hits followed until 1955, when he scored his first #1 pop hit with “Rose Marie.”  The record sat at the top of the UK charts for an unprecedented 11 weeks until Bryan Adams broke the record in 1991.  In 1979, Whitman appeared in one of the earliest infomercials on television.  The piece is considered THE most successful one ever, responsible for selling 1.5 million copies of his All My Best greatest hits album.   Over the course of his career, Whitman sold over 120 million albums which include his most recent, 2010’s Twilight On The Trail, his first new studio album in 26 years.  Slim Whitman died of heart failure on June 19, 2013.  He was 90 years old.

Posted by themusicsover on May 8, 2010

Richard “Eddy” Arnold
May 15, 1918 – May 8, 2008

Eddy Arnold was one of the original architects of what would become known as the “Nashville Sound.”  Extremely popular, Arnold sold over 85 million records and had almost 150 songs on the charts.  Of those, 28 reached the top.  He is part of an elite group of country artists that stayed relevant for over 50 years.  Arnold launched his career at the age of 18 and made his first radio appearance in 1936.  In those early days, he was managed by Col. Tom Parker who later managed Elvis Presley.  By the ’50s, Arnold was hosting his own television show.  Remarkably, it aired on all three networks.   Arnold “retired” in 1999 at the age of 81, but released a new album in 2005.  He passed away on May 8, 2008 at the age of 89.

Clarence “Hank”  Snow
May 9, 1914 – December 20, 1999

hank-snowHank Snow was a prolific country star who, during a 30-year stretch of his career, logged in more than 70 country-charting singles, including at least seven that reached number one.  Over the course of a career that spanned six decades, he sold more than 80 million albums.  His songs have been covered by such greats as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, and the Rolling Stones.  After running away from an abusive home at 12, Snow went to work as a cabin boy on a fishing boat, learned to play the guitar he ordered from a department store catalog, and by 16, he was playing his first his first gigs.  He signed with RCA Records in 1936 and released records for them for the next 45 years.  After moving to Nashville, it was Snow who convinced the Grand Ole Opry to let a young Elvis Presley grace their stage for the first time in 1954.   He continued to use Presley as his opening act and later introduced him to Col. Tom Parker.  Hank Snow was 85 when he passed away at his home on December 20, 1999.
