Joe Ptacek
May 1, 1972 – January 20, 2010

Joe Ptacek was the co-founder and lead singer for Illinois death-metal band, Broken Hope.  Formed in the Chicago area in 1988, the band released five albums for Metal Blade Records before disbanding in 2002.  The band had recently been discussing reforming.  On January 20, 2010, Joe Ptacek died of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot.  He was 37 years old.

  1. This just sucks! R.I.P. Broken Hope was one of the first death metal bands I got into and “Swamped In Gore” to me is one of those albums that I will always love.

  2. Can’t believe it. Broken Hope was a pioneer in Death Metal. Insane music, insane lyrics, and insane vocals. Absolutely set the standard. RIP Joe, going to work tomorrow, with Loathing in the CD player. I’ll take it out soon, only to listen to “Repulsive”, and then “Swamped in…”, you get the idea. My thoughts are with your family.

  3. wow im fukin horrified i met joe many times when i lived in montreal i even got him sum real primo weed when they played with unleashed at woodstock,,i still remember(your not gonna rip me off are you)im like dude broken hope are my favorite band and yr my fav singers,,so do the math,,,,,fuck no i dont rip anyone off,,so fukin sad,,,why why why why RIP JOE

    Just heard about this and it’s Feb 3rd!!!!
    Sad to hear…..I toured with Joe and Broken Hope in 1997 (Monstrosity) and Vader, we had some good times on that tour!!
    He was a good lad.

  5. joe inspired my vocal stylings a great deal. he was a forefather of gore vocals. i will miss him a great deal although i never met him. we were anticipating a reunion. broken hope will never be or sound the same ever…
