Gregory Slay
DOB Unknown – January 1, 2010

Gregory Slay was the drummer for Birmingham, Alabama alternative rock band, Remy Zero.  Formed in 1989, the band piqued the interest of music fans and critics alike when, in 1995, Radiohead snapped them up to open for their US tour based solely on the band’s demo tapes.  The group soon recorded and released their self-titled debut and were being touted as the “next big thing” while getting airplay on the hippest radio stations, and song placements in numerous television shows and movies.  Their “Save Me” was selected to be the theme song for the television series, Smallville.  The band broke up in 2003 and Slay went on to make solo recordings under the name, Sleepwell.  He also played on the theme song for Nip/Tuck.  Gregory Slay was 40 years old when he passed away from complications of cystic fibrosis.

  1. Greg Slay was my idol. i grew up in mobile alabama with my band chifauco opening for his band LoppyBogymi and we absolutely idolized him,,,, tim ramenofsky and james orr. we have lost a great deal here today. greg was an original badass. an american treasure that beat all those odds.. we will all miss him… have a drink for him…!!

    1. ” I remember Greg and I and Sam Shober riding around downtown Mobile during Mardi Gras circa 1987 drinking beer and screaming along with Motorhead in my car….good memories, so long friend!!

  2. This is sad news indeed.
I did not know Greg personally, but had several great conversations with him after LoppyBogymi shows in Nashville in the early 90s.
He was a great musician and a great guy.

  3. Greg along with Marc Long and myself had a band in 1985-1986 called Blind Dog (named after his blind dog who would wander into our practices) as he was leaving xcel and just before loppybojymi. Marc and I moved to Los Angeles in 1986 after graduation to attend the Musicians Institute while leaving Greg behind as he had another year of high school. What an amazing talent he had as a drummer and singer and songwriter and friend. I found out 5 minutes ago that he was the drummer in Remy Zero as i have recently fell in love with their music.
